Sofia sat at her desk in her office, with stacks of paper places neatly and orderly in front of her. Looking at the papers, she turned to her computer and glanced over the lists she had written out weeks ago.
Pros and Cons lists had been made out for each college that had sent her an acceptance letter. The two she was most interested in, however, was Princeton and Yale. They were the top schools on her list of which college she wanted to attend.
Her parents had each attended one of the two schools, so Sofia was prepared for both the good and the bad.
Unless times have changed so badly... She thought, with a sigh, as took off her glasses.
Rubbing her eyes, she silently willed the headache that was coming to go away.
If Calder was here, he'd tell me to just use 'eenie, minee, moe'... She thought, before a faint smile came over her pink lips.
Glancing at a frame on her desktop, she reached over and picked it up. It had her and a boy around her age in it. The boy with black hair and blue eyes was holding her glasses out of her reach, while laughing, as Sofia was trying to get them back. Sofia had a smile on her face showing she was actually having a good time.
Calder's mother had taken the picture without them knowing til it was too late. As a present one Christmas, his mother gave Sofia the picture in the frame to keep.
Every time they broke up, however, Sofia would always swear she would throw it out.
All she ever did was put it in a drawer, forget about it for a little while, before finding it again.
A sigh left her as she put the frame back on her desk. She needed to focus.
Even when he wasn't around, he still found a way to distract her...
Sofia turned back to her computer, looking over the pros and cons once more. She had to make a decision soon.
A knock on her door brought Sofia out of her thoughts. Turning to the door, she saw her mother's head peek in.
“Come in,” Sofia said, with a smile.
“Sorry to disturb you, dear, but this letter was delivered for you. I think it's another acceptance letter,” her mother said, as she stepped further into the room.
Sofia looked at her mother in confusion. “But... I received replies from every school I sent an application to...” she said, eyeing the envelope in her mother's hands.
“It's not surprising for you to receive a letter from a school you didn't apply too. You did mark highest in the state.” Her mother spoke proudly as she handed Sofia the envelope.
Sofia rolled her eyes lightly at her mother's comment. “I just did what I was supposed to... even corrected a few of the teachers. I'm honestly still surprised they didn't expel me for that.”
“Well, you know your father wouldn't have let them. He is on the City Council. Anyways, open the letter, it could just be junk mail. I've never heard of the school mentioned on it, but I thought you would want to look it over.”
Sofia looked down at the envelope as her mother left the room. Pantheon University? I've never heard of it either...
Sitting back down at her desk, she pulled out her letter opener from a drawer. Cutting the envelope open, Sofia pulled out the letter and began to read.
As she read, the letters glowed, her eyes glowing in turn. Memories filled her mind, memories of another life.
Her hand gripped tightly to the letter, before she took a gasping breath. Putting a hand to her forehead, Sofia looked down at herself, as if seeing her clothes for the first time.
Denim jeans and a red t-shirt greeted her sight. Turning her chair around, she looked at the mirror on her vanity. Hazel green eyes and brown hair greeted her. She slowly stood, her head held high.
Athena had her memories returned, remembering the competition that had been placed between some of the gods, even from gods of other Pantheons.
She was the Greek goddess of wisdom, war, strategy, crafting...
A memory of her mortal life came to her mind suddenly, causing her to lose the calm look she had. Turning to the frame on her desk, she picked it up.
“...No one must know...” she whispered, before moving to throw the picture away.
If any of the other gods knew... She would never hear the end of it...
But before she could throw the picture away, she looked at it once more.
A gentle smile came over her features, before she moved and put the picture away in a drawer.
It will be my secret... no one needs to know... She thought, closing the drawer. With a deep breath, she left the room to tell her mortal parents that she had found the college for her.
